Who Am I?
I am Jillian Baker. I grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah. I spent my childhood boating and camping with my family. Teasdale is a small town in southern Utah that I consider my second home. It is a great place to go 4-wheeling, cut a Christmas tree, or just chill with my family. I work at Tony's Grove Garden Center in Hyde Park and I love it. I get to plant flowers and make floral arrangements. I consider myself a super senior. I have been attending Utah State for what seems like forever. I have had at least four different majors. The reason I decided to become a teacher involved being a substitute teacher. I enjoyed being with the students and wanted more time with the students to get to know them better. After subbing almost grade I decided that I enjoyed the older students better and could teach a subject that I loved. I have always been a history nerd. Now I have to opportunity to help students gain a better understanding of history and maybe even learn to love it.

I understand the "super senior" thing...try being in school for 11 years! But I think all of your different majors will just make you a more well-rounded and knowledgeable teacher, so in the end it will probably be an asset rather than a drawback. Thanks for your first posting and I look forward to reading your thoughts about teaching and learning history in the weeks to come!
ReplyDeleteHistory really is the best, huh? I love it! So I have an experience about Tony's Grove that I'll tell you about. This summer I worked for All About which is a preschool and daycare, but during the summer we do a summer camp for kids ages 5-10 years old. We took a field trip one day over to Tony's Grove. It was awesome! Other than the fact that ALL the kids had to go to the bathroom throughout the trip, so the other teacher had to constantly take kids away from the group for that. As the kids ran rambunctiously down the aisles, they would notice the cool plants and comment on them. We even got flowers for free to take home.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite quote from the trip,
Student 1: "Where are we going today?"
Me: "To Tony's Grove Greenhouse."
Student 1: "Will Tony Hawk be there?"
Student 2: "Oh, will Tony Stark be there?"
This was all said in complete seriousness.
I know you're from Spanish Fork, but why do you not say that you are from Spaneesh Faurk? Or say things such as "That don't make sense?" My mother is from Spaneesh and that's how the real locals say it.
